Arch Manning could spark similar controversy to Caleb Williams as 2024 College Football season progresses

It was not long ago that former Oklahoma QB, turned South Carolina Gamecock, Spencer Rattler was being heralded as the potential number one overall pick.

Going into the 2021 college football season Rattler had all eyes on him and it was his spot to lose. As we all know, he lost it.

Controversy with Caleb Williams and Spencer Rattler

The story of Caleb Williams would begin that season at Oklahoma.

The former five-star QB would get his chance in the storied Red River Rivalry against Texas. Williams would come into the game, replacing a struggling Rattler and he would lead Oklahoma to a comeback win against their arch-rival.

Potential Arch Manning and Quinn Ewers Controversy

Don't look now but Texas very well might find themselves in a similar situation this year.

Quinn Ewers decided to transfer back home to Texas after committing to and signing with Ohio State coming out of high school.

He would immediately step in and be the starter for the Longhorns and appears to have led them towards Texas truly being back.

The question is now: Can he fend off Arch Manning?

In the Texas spring game, Arch Manning would have quite the debut. Arch Manning would be 19-25, throwing for 355 yards, with three touchdowns. Two of those touchdowns would be deep shots of 75-plus yards.

Pivotal Moments in Texas' Schedule

If you haven't taken a look at Texas' football schedule this year, let me go ahead and spoil it for you.

It is grueling.

  • In week two, Texas travels up to Ann Arbor to take on the reigning national champions, the Michigan Wolverines.
  • In week six, they face off against Oklahoma in the Red River Rivalry.
  • In week seven, Texas will face the Georgia Bulldogs

That is going to be quite the challenge.

The games they have in between Michigan and Oklahoma are against

  • UTSA
  • Louisiana Monore
  • Mississippi State

Mississippi State's new head coach is Jeff Lebby, someone who is very familiar with the Texas team and how they operate, as he came from Oklahoma. You should expect he will have his team ready for a fight.

If you're looking at the worst-case scenario, Texas could start the season 3-4 through the first eight weeks of the season.

That would be trending in the wrong direction of Texas truly being back.

Quinn Ewers' best defense against Arch Manning

If Ewers struggles in any of those games there would certainly be rumblings for Arch Manning to start to see some playing time.

After all, head coach Steve Sarkisian has already been asked if he has given thoughts to benching Ewers.

While Sarkisian gave a swift "no" to that question, that tone can easily change when you have a former five-star QB who was as hyped up as Arch Manning was sitting behind Ewers waiting.

Especially if Arch continues to play the way he did in the Texas spring game.

Will this actually happen?

Only time will tell, but one thing is for certain: Ewers needs to stay on top of his game in order to fend off Arch Manning.
