Torey Lovullo Reflects on Tough Loss and Gallen’s Unraveling Seventh Inning
Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

Zac Gallen was one out away from completing seven shutout innings when things went completely south for Arizona.

With two outs, the Tigers erupted for six runs in an inning where Arizona went through three different pitchers. Three earned runs were charged to Gallen.

After the game, Torey Lovullo kept it simple, stating, “This is a tough loss, we had a lot going in our favor, Zac was throwing the ball extremely well and we got into that 7th inning, I liked the matchups with Zac in that part of their lineup, and they just continued to grind him down.”

Lovullo admitted he was confident once his club took a 2-0 lead, given Gallen’s groove on the mound and the depth they had ready in their bullpen. The skipper noted, “We got out to a 2-0 lead and things were going in a very very positive way, in my opinion. It was two pitchers really going toe to toe with one another, it looked like they both had good stuff, and with the 2-0 lead and the bullpen that we had in that situation, I felt like we were going to be able to come out on top in that game.”

The Diamondbacks have allowed Detroit to tally 32 hits in the first two games of the series. The Tigers were previously shut out by the Marlins in back-to-back games before they traveled to Arizona on Friday.

Speaking on Kevin Ginkel, who had another disappointing outing, allowing two earned runs in the 8th inning, causing his season ERA to rise to 4.91, Lovullo denied any rumors that Ginkel will be losing out on his role as a leveraged reliever in the Diamondbacks’ bullpen.

Lovullo was also questioned about his back-and-forth with Tigers’ Jack Flaherty. After initially saying he would not comment on the situation, Lovullo stated, “Trust me, what happened there, what you guys saw … wasn’t the first thing that happened. I can hold serve on one thing, but we felt like there was more than just that situation that popped up and I’d had enough.”

The Diamondbacks will look to salvage a win in the series finale against the Tigers tomorrow at 1:10 PM.
